Dog Food FAQs
- What are common dog food allergy symptoms? Common food allergy symptoms can include scratching, soft or loose stool, vomiting, hot spots, loss of fur/excess shedding, ear infections, anal gland infections, eye discharge
- How should you switch to a new dog food? If your dog has had stomach issues in the past, you may want to do so slowly over a week, gradually introducing the new food so by the 7th day you are feeding your dog the entirely new dog food. If you choose to do so Cold Turkey, you can expect loose stools for the first few days but the transition will be quicker.
- How long before you can see improvement in a dog with food allergies? You can expect to see improvement in two weeks at the earliest but normally not until a month after the dog has been on the new dog food. This is how long it takes the dog’s system to cycle through the old food and get the ingredients they are allergic to out of their system.
- What type of food do you want to feed to a very active working dog? You would want to choose dog food high in protein and fats. These are both used to supply energy to a dog. Higher calories are also needed to keep weight on the dog, not just to keep them going. Low filler content is also important, because a dog can only fit so much in his stomach and if you are wasting that space with fillers, you have less room for the important energy-supplying ingredients they require.
- How can your dog lose weight on their current diet? Lower the amount of food you are currently feeding. Depending on how overweight the dog is, the best rule of thumb is to cut the food down by ½ a cup. If the dog is not losing weight within two weeks, then cut it down by another ½ cup." it needs to say 1/4 of the amount you feed not 1/2 cup increments
